Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important official stated the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
