Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
