Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
